Farrakhan’s mother, Sarah Mae Manning, was an immigrant from Nevis and St. Kitts. and raised him in Boston, and his father was Percival Clark from Jamaica – his parents separated prior to Louis’ birth. His mother then married Louis Wolcott, who adopted young Louis. He was a hard core religious boy, who became active in the St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church that was in his Roxbury neighbourhood. He was educated at Boston Latin School and English High School, where he continued improving on the violin which he had first started when just six, such that he played with the Boston Civic Symphony and Boston College Orchestra from the age of 13, and even won national competitions. In the year 1946, he turned out to be the first black performer to appear on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour. He also worked with the Episcopal St. Cyprian’s Church in Massachusetts as an active member.

Louis wrote and performed his own songs, and in the early 1950s went on tour, singing calypso songs, but then came under the influence of Elijah Mohammed through Malcom X, and converted into the Nation of Islam(NOI) in 1955, but having to renounce music on the orders of Elijah Muhammad. He subsequently moved quickly through the ranks to become assistant to Malcolm X in Boston, then minister when the latter was moved to Harlem, and when Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965, national spokesman and representative, plus minister at the Harlem Mosque, where he served until 1975.

Farrakhan became a favourite of many: he initiated a new Nation of Islam in the late 1970s, which adhered to Elijah Muhammad’s teachings. He also started a newspaper “The Final Call”, that helped him to communicate his views to the people while he was preaching at the NOI. Farrakhan spoke on political and social issues in his new position. One of the most significant accomplishments of Farrakhan was organising the Million Man March in 1995 on Washington, D.C., in which over two million attendees participated. He subsequently supported Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign, but later withdrew his support in the opposition to US interference in the Arab Spring. Farrakhan’s influence has wained considerably in recent years.

In his personal life, Farrakhan went into wedlock with Khardijah Farrakhan, (Betsy Ross) in 1955. He dropped college right after his junior year to look after his wife and their first-born, and subsequently the couple went on to have nine children.

In the year 2006, Louis informed NOI members of his ill health, initially suffering from a peptic ulcer, which lead to major abdominal surgery in 2007, In October 2013 he suffered Aheart attack, due to which he had to give up public appearances for about two months.
