After a valiant three years fighting illness, “Reggie” Wilkerson, an All-Scholastic quarterback who captained Chelsea High School to one of its best seasons, passed away on Monday, December 18. His age was fifty-two.

In addition to being inducted into the Chelsea High School Hall of Fame for his athletic prowess in basketball and football, Reggie’s magnetic personality, endearing nature, and willingness to mentor young people on the path to success in life also made him a Hall of Fame-caliber individual.

Reggie’s CHS teammate Jennifer Hassell, the wife of John Hassell, described her husband’s exaggerated aura as “a force that left a huge, lasting impression on everybody that he came in contact with.” Without a doubt, we will miss him.

Bruce Harrison, the coach of the Chelsea Youth Basketball League Bucks, was the first to notice Reggie Wilkerson’s athletic ability.

“I first met Reggie when he was eight years old. I remember his uncle’s car was a Buick, a I told Reggie if you take the ‘i’ out of a Buick, it becomes a Buck,” recalled Brucie, who was assisted on the Bucks’ bench by coaches Leo Robinson and Ray Bell. “I said, Reggie, if you sign up for Youth Basketball, I’ll try to pick you. I was able to pick Reggie and he excelled on my team for five years.”

As the finest defensive player in the league in his last season, Reggie teamed up with legendary guard Leo Chafin in the Bucks’ backcourt.

The most anticipated individual showdown in the championship game was between Reggie Wilkerson and Bobby Mullaney, the Sixers’ league MVP guard. CYBL fans had been looking for a Bucks-Sixers final. Reggie and Company, however, easily defeated the Lakers to win the championship after the Sixers were stunned by them in the quarterfinals.

Reggie was constantly trying to help others and loved his family and friends. Following the death of his lovely mother Irena in 2014, Reggie and his sister Trina started planning the Wilkerson and Robinson Family Benefit, an event that raises money for cancer research. The Merritt Club was filled at the family’s yearly get-togethers, which honored Irena Wilkerson’s life and raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes.

Reginald “Reggie” Wilkerson, one of Chelsea’s most notable and well-liked athletes, has passed away. He was a special individual who touched the lives of countless people with his kind and charming demeanor. He will be missed.
