His parents Nora Ella and Albert King were sharecroppers. King’s mother left the family for another man when he was barely 4 years old. His maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr took the nod of raising him in Kilmichael, Mississippi.
In his teenage years, he moved to Indianola, Mississippi which he often spoke off as his hometown and worked as a cotton gin. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for some time before he was ruled “essential to the war economy” based on his experience as a tractor driver.

King was first drawn to music as he attended church and sang. He later followed his mother’s cousin, Bukka White who was blues guitarist to Memphis where he began to perform on the Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program. It was there he began gaining followers.
King went on to start a career in music during the late 1940s and 1950s when he become a part of the Beale Streeters. He performed alongside Bobby Bland, Johnny Ace, and Earl Forest.
He went to have a successful solo career after his equally successful stint with the Beale Streeters. In 1956 alone, he went on a mega touring, playing 342 concerts that year alone.
King won the Grammy Award for his version of “The Thrill is Gone” which Rolling Stone magazine recognized as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 1970.
Out of the 20 nominations he had throughout his career, he won 16 of them from various categories including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording, Best Pop Instrumental Performance, Best Traditional Blues Album and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals just to mention a few.

King died on May 14, 2015 in his sleep from vascular dementia caused by a series of small strokes as a consequence of his type 2 diabetes.
